Top Things to Do in the Catskills This Fall (Near Margaretville)

Top Things to Do in the Catskills This Fall (Near Margaretville)

Fall in Delaware County is a short-radius season. Peek-a-Blue is five minutes from Margaretville village, about 10–15 minutes from Andes, 18 minutes from Belleayre, and 15–20 minutes from the Balsam Lake Mountain trailhead near Arkville. You do not need a five-stop foliage circuit. You need a drive, a hike that matches the legs in the car, a Saturday market while it is still on, and heat when the air turns.

This is a list of things we actually send people out to do from the cabin. It is not a festival calendar. Hours and ticketed events move; we will not invent them here.

1. A small foliage loop: Margaretville, Andes, Route 28

The Catskill Mountains Scenic Byway (Route 28) is how you arrived from the Thruway. You do not need a second byway to “see fall.” A tight loop from the cabin: Margaretville (5 minutes) → Andes (10–15 minutes) → back up the hill. Stop where the light is on the ridges, not where a parking lot is already a line.

For when the color is actually here, use I LOVE NY’s weekly foliage report and map (updates every Wednesday) rather than a guessed peak day. We wrote out the timing rules, including this week’s Delaware County percentages, in When Catskills fall colors show up near Margaretville.

2. Balsam Lake Mountain Fire Tower

This is the half-day hike from Peek-a-Blue. The trailhead we use is on Mill Brook Road outside Arkville, about 15–20 minutes from the cabin.

The Catskills Visitor Center describes the standard route: blue-marked Dry Brook Ridge Trail about 2.2 miles to the junction, then red-marked Balsam Lake Mountain Trail about 0.75 miles to the tower; return the same way. That is a moderate ~6-mile round trip. Summit elevation is about 3,723 feet. The restored fire tower is the view — the trees at the top do not give you the 360.

DEC’s Catskills Fire Tower Challenge notes the same Mill Brook Road approach as a moderate six-mile round trip, and places the tower in Balsam Lake Mountain Wild Forest. Download a map at the cabin; cell service drops. Start early on weekends.

This is not a one-hour kid hike. If the group includes a stroller, use the Andes Rail Trail instead and save the tower for the people who want a summit.

3. Easier walking: Andes Rail Trail and Pakatakan Trail

Andes Rail Trail (about 15 minutes) — flat, about two miles round trip on the old railroad bed. Strollers, morning runs, anyone who does not want a scramble.

Pakatakan Trail (about 10 minutes) — easy, shaded, creekside near Dry Brook. Kids throw rocks. Water shoes if they will go in.

Both stay inside the same radius as the villages. You can walk in the morning and still have an afternoon.

4. Saturday farm stands: Pakatakan, then Andes

Pakatakan Farmers Market at the historic Round Barn in Halcottsville is about 10 minutes from the cabin. Saturdays, 9 AM–1 PM, typically May through October. Produce, bread, meat — the regional hub, not a foliage gimmick. Go early.

Andes Farmers Market is the smaller Saturday option the same morning.

If you want pick-your-own apples, ask at check-in which orchards are actually picking that weekend. Varieties and hours move. We will not pin a farm here as if the gate were permanent.

5. Margaretville and Andes on foot

Margaretville is the grocery-and-pastry village: Café Marguerite on Main Street, Oakley’s, Oda, The Inn Between. Five minutes downhill.

Andes is smaller on purpose: Andes Hotel, Cafe Mutsi, a Main Street walk that does not require a trailhead strategy.

Use the villages when the overlooks are crowded or the weather is socked in. Fall color is also a street tree and a hillside behind a church. You do not have to collect pull-offs.

6. Belleayre as elevation — and only as a ski day if the mountain says so

Belleayre is about 18 minutes. In foliage season the mountain is useful as a ridge: a short drive, a different elevation, a look at how far the color has moved. I LOVE NY’s first 2026 weekly report already notes color at Belleayre Mountain in Highmount. Plattekill is about 20 minutes and quieter.

Early ski season is a different question. Opening days, hours, and ticket products change. Check belleayre.com and plattekill.com the week you come. Do not treat this list as a snow report or a lift calendar.

Hunter is about 50 minutes. That is a different trip.

7. Come back for the Finnish sauna

Cold days are the point of a cabin with heat. Peek-a-Blue’s on-property heat is a private 6-person Finnish sauna, plus the wood stove and the fire pit if the evening is still. Three acres, wraparound deck, sleeps 8 across 3 bedrooms.

The failure mode of a fall Saturday is staying out until everyone is wrecked and then driving toward the city in the dark. You are 15–20 minutes from the tower, 18 from Belleayre, 5 from the village. Come back mid-afternoon. Rotate through the sauna. Cook, or eat in Margaretville or Andes.

Pack layers. Mountain evenings drop even when the afternoon still looks like September. Bug spray can linger into early fall; ticks do too.

How to put a weekend together without overfilling it

Friday: Thruway, Route 28, arrive, grocery in Margaretville, wood stove. Saturday: Pakatakan if it is still in season, then either the fire tower or the rail trail, then the sauna. Sunday: Andes or a Belleayre ridge look, then the same 2.5–3 hour drive home. Leave earlier than the last possible minute.

One outing a day is enough for eight people. The hill is the rest of the itinerary.
